The Advent season is here and Christmas is just around the corner. At this time of year, all our focus turns to the baby in the manger: Jesus - the Son of the Most High, Israel’s promised Messiah, Immanuel – God with us. As we like to say, Jesus Christ is the “reason for the season.” But there’s another divine player in the Christmas story that we tend to overlook – the Holy Spirit. Luke features the Spirit seven times in his telling of Jesus’ birth (Luke 1:15, 17, 35, 41, 67; 2:25-27). All the big characters in the story – Mary, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, Zechariah, Simeon – all seem to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Clearly, Luke is trying to tell us something here… If the Spirit was so essential in the birth and life of Jesus (and especially in the early church – see Acts – also written by Luke), what is the Spirit’s role in our life? How has God called us to live “by the Spirit”?
In other words, where are we on our “spiritual” journeys? Where is God leading us and how are we supposed to get there? How is the Spirit working in me and through me? What is “spiritual” growth and how does that really happen?
These are big questions. Maybe they’re questions you’ve wondered about before. Maybe they sound new. In any case, these are questions that define our lives as followers of the one anointed by the Spirit (Luke 4:18), Jesus Christ, who have been given power by the Holy Spirit to be “witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
Well, I’ve got good news today: these are questions we want to help you answer! In fact, these questions are MEANT to be answered together. We gather in community to build each other up and encourage each other, so that we might live as “witnesses” to the good news of God’s salvation coming in Jesus Christ. Our spiritual growth is absolutely dependent on our participation in a community of believers who worship, study, pray, and serve together as the Body of Christ.
So, now that I’ve raised all these big, spiritual questions, you may be wondering: “What do I do? Where do I go? Who can help?” No worries. We’ve got you covered.
After our worship service this Sunday (Dec. 9th), we’ll be hosting a special event we’re calling IGNITE! And it’s all about the spiritual journey, spiritual growth, and spiritual gifts. This is the first event of its kind at Six:Eight so we’re really excited about how God will use this time to “fan the flame” of the Spirit in us.
At IGNITE!, you’ll be equipped with new knowledge about the spiritual journey and the next steps you could take to continue in your spiritual growth. We’ll also be talking about spiritual gifts and how those can be identified in our lives.
When the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples and the church was born back in the second chapter of Acts, it’s said that little “tongues of fire” descended on the disciples’ heads. Our prayer is to see this same kind of fire IGNITE in all of us; the kind of fire that spreads through our lives, our homes, and our communities and shines the light of God’s hope, joy, peace, and love into the darkness of our world.
Will you join us for IGNITE? If so, please send a quick note over to Lindley (firstname.lastname@example.org) and let her know you’re coming!
